Is openness inflationary? Policy commitment and imperfect competition

چکیده

This paper proposes a channel through which increased openness to international trade can increase a country’s long-run incentive to create inflation. The theoretical justification for this channel is the well known ‘‘beggar thy neighbor’’ incentive, and its dominance relies on a monetary authority’s ability to commit to policy as well as the asymmetric effects of the underlying frictions in the model across domestic and foreign households. Consistent with previous work, the model predicts that the inflationary bias of openness is dampened by the degree of imperfect competition within a country. 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Competition Policy in Latin America

This paper reports on recent developments in Latin American competition (antitrust) policy from the perspective of the role competition policy in supporting market reform. Competition policy is an instance of the use of law to influence economic behavior. More than eighty nations have enacted antitrust laws in the last twenty years, mostly based on U.S. and E.U. models. A review of the antitrus...

Optimisation of Healthcare Contracts: Tensions Between Standardisation and Innovation; Comment on “Competition in Healthcare: Good, Bad or Ugly?”

An important determinant of health system performance is contracting. Providers often respond to financial incentives, despite the ethical underpinnings of medicine, and payers can craft contracts to influence performance. Yet contracting is highly imperfect in both single-payer and multi-payer health systems. Arguably, in a competitive, multi-payer environment, contractual innovation may occur...

Entropic Economic Order Quantity Model for Items with Imperfect Quality Considering Constant Rate of Deterioration under Fuzzy Inflationary Conditions

It was suggested in 2004 by some researchers that it might be possible to improve production systems performance by applying the first and second laws of thermodynamics to reduce system entropy. Then these laws were used to modify the economic order quantity (EOQ) model to derive an equivalent entropic order quantity (EnOQ). Moreover the political instability or uncertainty of a country (as wel...

Trade and Labour Demand Elasticity in Imperfect Competition: Theory and Evidence

In recent years, a growing body of the literature in international trade tried to investigate whether openness has been increasing labour demand elasticities. From a labour theory perspective in partial equilibrium, the Allen-Hamermesh theoretical framework became one of the few general frameworks to refer to1. This theory states that labour demand elasticity should be positively affected by it...

Turning a Blind Eye: Costly Enforcement, Credible Commitment and Minimum

In many countries, noncompliance with minimum wage legislation is widespread, and authorities may be seen as having turned a blind eye to a legislation they have themselves passed. We show that turning a blind eye can indeed be an equilibrium phenomenon with ex post credibility, in a model of minimum wage policy with imperfect competition, imperfect enforcement and imperfect commitment. Since c...
